The origin of flowering cherry
(Prunus yedoensis Matsum) is Korea’s Jeju Island!

Many people think cherry blossom trees were originated from Japan. However, it was confirmed that a majority of cherry blossom in Jinhae, flowering cherry, was originated from Korea’s Jeju Island, not Japan, and there were active campaigns to renew people’s awareness on cherry blossom trees and to revive cherry blossom of Jinhae.

In spring, Jinhae becomes the cherry blossom heaven. According to ‘Illustrated Encyclopedia of Fauna and Flora of Korea’, are listed 17 cherry blossom species in total and among them, five grow in Korea. In Jinhae, various tree species are planted in addition to the flowering cherry from Hallasan Mt., which is designated 156th natural monument in Korea.
For a while, cherry blossom in Jinhae was controversial. The trees were planted to improve the city when building a military port in Jinhae after Japan’s forced occupation. However, after liberation, many trees were cut down as people criticized the cherry blossom trees were legacy of Japanese occupation.
Then in 1962 two botanists – Park Man-gyu and Bu Jong-hyu – identified that the origin of flowering cherry trees is Jeju Island, renewing people’s awareness on cherry blossom trees and reviving Jinhae again as a splendid cherry blossom city. In order to preserve the cherry blossom trees, each year old trees are treated by a special tree hospital and get surgical treatment when necessary while a project to improve and foster cherry blossom trees built in 2006 and operates a cherry blossom lab inside the Agricultural Technology Center and is establishing research infrastructure so that flowers can be seen in spring and autumn. In addition, after developing tree species that are suitable for climate and soil through test cultivation and improvement, it donated 6,800 plants in 2009 to places such as Jinhae NFRDI Environment Eco-Park, Jinhaeru and Sojukdo. In order to see Jinhae cherry blossom that has such history and stories, people at home and abroad visit Jinhae in each spring.
